Senseless Awareness (I)

Senseless Awareness (I) - Hi everyone! - What sense, I am truly asking myself, does it make to live embedded in a society which, in essence, reacts - if at all - merely in a most delayed and above all overly hesitant fashion once we are in distress and thus in acute need for help? As a prelude to this week's blog entry, I would like to make a reference to a disgusting Facebook post from two days ago which immensely upset me. Somewhere in America somebody was filming the following rapidly unfolding incident. Among a rather short line of customers waiting to be served at a Fastfood eatery place was a man who suddenly went into convulsions apparently suffering a seizure and consequently collapsed. At first, nothing happened other than everyone just staring dumbfounded onto the floor where that man was helplessly jerking around. Mind you, the individual taking that video remained just as inert! After a few painful seconds which were evidently needed to mentally adjust to that scary scenario playing out right in front of their eyes, one of them finally set himself in motion to approach the poor soul. Yes, he went up to him and even slouched down but unfortunately not to provide help in any way but rather to get straight to his wallet! Absolutely right, what the hell?! Just inconceivable, but that piece of low life even took his time to carefully pull the money out of the still spastic victim before he got up and rather leisurely strolled away! You may now quite rightfully wonder about the reactions of the bystanders. Well, telling from the video, with the exception of a couple of startled but fairly muffled and all too subdued exclamations of mild protest, there was absolutely nothing else. Even the video taping person moved only as much to the left as to still capture the couthless thief at least by means of his or her cellphone camera. I felt my stomach flip rather instantly. Of course, that one memory about a rather similar happening almost dating back 20 years immediately pushed itself back into my consciousness. That day I happened to walk behind a chicly dressed older lady who entirely out of the blue and without any warning whatsoever went down in the middle of the central bustling shopping strip in my home town. Needless to say, I was completely startled, and to a certain degree, I literally found myself debilitated as far as promptly stepping into action at first. Thank God, among the hundreds of pedestrians just walking by there quickly popped up a few courageous souls willing to react spontaneously and ad hoc. So in the end, the five of us took care of that lady who was foaming at her mouth during a massive epileptic seizure which left her entirely helpless as she was unconsciously fending for herself. Yes, I do admit that the initial fear as far as helpfully intervening had quite obviously had a paralyzing impact on me for the first couple of seconds, but together we ultimately came to terms with that grave obstacle and were so able to offer adequate help until the ambulance arrived. However, the fact that someone dares abuse an emergency situation like that and takes advantage of an absolutely helpless victim in ways of committing theft or other disgraceful acts of crime to me is simply the bottom of the barrel and hence totally inexcusable! What is even more disgusting, though are all those who witness such but do nothing at all in order to prevent this from happening! In the light of such an atrocity, this very well begs the question why this is occurring ever the more frequently all over the world? How come a large part of us seems to be roaming around like zombies all detached from anything emotional while others boldly turn into perpetrators? The answer is somber because nobody cares and thus needs not fear any consequences in terms of punishment or persecution. How sad is this? - Come back next week for more about this issue. In the meantime, please, check out my latest e- book, PURE OBSESSION II on amazon. com under the pseudonym NIKA LEANDRA for only $9.99. Thank you!

College or no college - That's the question    Now the time is here again for high school graduates to venture off to college and university. I still, to this day, remember being thrilled and overly excited to start as a fresh(wo)man in a new place where studying would go hand in glove with partying for the next few years. I love to see every one's kids swarm out and flock together in college districts and on student campus terrains. Most teenagers get accepted somewhere even though often at second or third choice sites, but they will all have to face one and the same question which is, at what price? Unless you are granted a scholarship, three years and plus of college education costs you an arm and a leg, and if you keep going for more profound specialization, you will be in debts up your neck by the time you have got your PhD. Then what? Go and spit out job applications like a ball machine hoping that someone is going to hire you - unless of course you were lucky eno...
Buy small and local   Hi everybody! - Coming from a tiny country like Austria, one might assume that globalisation is just a phenomenon tailored for larger nations, but no, it has also been affecting us all across Europe. Globalisation itself is of complex nature, and even though I'm not planning to write about globalisation per se today, it somehow dictates our overall shopping behavior by bringing in more and more big box chain stores worldwide which sets the general trend for methodically and eventually putting local small family- run as well as individualists' shops out of business. In the 70ies I remember mom and dad taking us along to a wide range of stores from the baker to the butcher, the grocer's, the florist, the hard ware place, the electrician, the tobacco store, etc. What great memories our weekly trips to the market created for us. There we would hand- pick fresh fruit, produce, and other delicacies. Sometimes we would even get a piece of fruit or a carrot fo...
